Toddler bed mattresses are 70cm by 140cm, which is larger than a standard cot mattress. You may find them listed as cot bed mattresses or junior bed mattresses. Depending on your budget you can choose a foam or sprung version however it is worth remembering that the quality of the mattress may have an impact on the quality of your sleep if your little one is uncomfortable and wakes during the night. Remember to turn and flip the mattress regularly to get the most out of it and help it to last as long as possible. |
A single duvet is too big for a junior bed and so you will need to buy a toddler duvet which measures 120cm by 150cm. Remember small children should not sleep under duvets with a high tog number in case they over heat. Standard toddler duvets have a tog rating of 4. Look for a duvet that can be machine washed and tumble dried as little ones can have accidents or be unwell and it's handy to be able to clean the bedding quickly. There is a selection of anti allergy duvets on the market which give you extra piece of mind when it comes to tucking your toddler in at night.

Just as with duvets standard pillows are too big for your child's junior bed. A junior pillow measures 40cm by 60cm which is perfect for a small head to snuggle down on. Anti allergy pillows are also available and worth investing in. Check that the pillow can be machine washed and if possible tumble dried which will help deal with any little accidents swiftly.

Now that we have discussed the necessity for smaller duvets and pillows to fit your child's toddler bed the natural progression is the bedding itself. Toddler bedding usually comes in a set with a duvet cover and pillow case and depending on your budget you can buy basic, easy care, plain sets or luxury generic sets or themed character bedding like the Disney Princess duvet cover set shown to the left. Remember that although it's likely that you will be able to wash and dry your bedding in a day there may be times, for example when your child is ill, that this is a stretch so arm yourself with a back up set even if you buy an extravagant set for every day use and a cheaper one for emergencies.

Toddlers can have accidents and they can't be helped so consider a mattress protector to help extend the life of the mattress. These range from padded covers, which can also make a cheap mattress feel a little more comfortable, to anti allergy for protection from dust mites and bed bugs or water proof covers for children prone to wetting the bed. As always make sure that you can machine wash the version that you choose and ideally pop it in the tumble drier to get it back on the bed as quickly as possible.
